1. What are thermal swimwear?
Thermal swimwear are made of thick insulating material, such as neoprene, for the purpose of thermal protection from cold water and weather. Not all thermal swimwear are made the same - the thickness of the insulating material, stitching, coverage, fit and combination of other materials all affect the thermal effectiveness of the swimwear.
2. Why would babies and children need thermal swimwear?
Even on warm days, a pool can feel very cold simply because our body temperature is higher than the temperature of the pool water. Your body loses heat to the water upon entry and you start to feel cold. For a little person with much less body heat than a typical adult, the huge body of cold water constantly draws heat away and makes the pool water feel unbearably cold.
When your little one comes out of the water, a non-thermal swimsuit will render the little one shivering almost immediately, due to heat loss from water evaporation and worse, wind chills from any passing breeze. Soon after, the little one, whose immune system is weaker than most people, starts sneezing non-stop and running a temperature. True story!
Thermal swimwear are made of an insulating material which slows down the rate of heat loss so that our core body temperature is maintained. This greatly helps the little ones feel more comfortable and able to stay longer in the water.
3. What's the difference between the Fleece-lined and Neoprene swimwear?
FLEECE-LINED
* What is it?
Our fleece-lined swimsuits have a soft fleece inner layer throughout the inside of the swimsuit, much like being wrapped up in a comfortable fleece blanket!
* How does it work?
The fleece lining is mounted onto a heat-insulating neoprene material. It works as a second layer of insulation. The fleece -lined swimwear provides superior thermal protection from the cold water by trapping a thin layer of water between the suit and the skin, effectively keeping that layer of water close to the body temperature.
Fleece is also hydrophobic, meaning it is able to quickly drain off water from the skin and itself the moment your little one is out of the water, thereby drying their skin almost instantly. This amazing property minimises the likelihood of the little ones catching a chill from excessive loss of body heat due to evaporation and wind chill.
Our fleece-lined swimsuits are perfect for:
- babies who do not move about much in the pool;
- little ones who feel cold easily;
- outdoor water play sessions;
- cold swimming pools; and
- pool or beach days during cold and/or windy seasons, or cooler time of day such as early mornings and late evenings.
This is the warmest swimwear option available for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers.
<Caution: Being a full body fleece suit, it can feel very warm when worn dry for vigorous activity. It is NOT suitable to be used when your little one is wearing this dry and running around in warm weather. It is intended for use in and around the pool and water play areas where your little one will get wet.>
* Sizing and fit?
In terms of fit, the fleece-lined swimsuit should be worn fitting to snug; a loose swimsuit allows for free movement of water in and out of the suit and renders the swimsuit useless in terms of thermal protection. Please refer to the respective product pages for sizing and fitting guidelines.
NEOPRENE
* What is it?
Our neoprene swimsuits are made with a combination of neoprene (for the core body panels) and Lycra (for the sleeves). Neoprene material is commonly used in surfing wetsuits due to its flexibility, durability and thermal effectiveness.
* How does it work?
Neoprene is an insulating material in itself, being made of small closed cells which contain air. In the water, the neoprene swimwear, when worn snug, maintains body warmth by trapping a thin layer of water between the suit and the skin, effectively keeping that layer of water close to the body temperature.
Neoprene materials come in a range of thickness, which directly affects its flexibility and comfort. We have chosen to use 1mm to 2mm thickness for our neoprene wetsuits in order to allow more flexibility for the little ones to move about.
* Sizing and fit?
Similar to the fleece-lined swimsuits, neoprene swimsuit should be worn fitting to snug; a loose swimsuit allows for free movement of water in and out of the suit and renders the swimsuit useless in terms of thermal protection.
4. Why do your thermal swimwear cost more than some of the swimwear or beachwear that we can find in big retail shops? Children outgrow their clothing so quickly!
We have worked hard to make these swimwear affordable. Our thermal swimwear price is consistent with, and in some cases, more affordable than other thermal swimwear brands. It cannot compare to the price of non-thermal swimwear or beachwear, as these differ in terms of function and durability.
Our price point is reasonable, taking into consideration the superior quality of the added materials (neoprene, fleece, more material for more coverage, etc), the longer life span and the unique designs. If well-taken care of, our thermal swimwear typically last for at least 2 years based on once weekly usage.
That said, we always give back to our loyal supporters! Our valued returning customers enjoy a lifetime 10% discount on subsequent purchases, including items on sale! It's non-transferable though, so remember to register as a member before you make your first purchase!
5. How do I wash my swimwear?
- All swimwear should be hand washed immediately after use, in cold water with very mild detergent. This helps prevent any damage caused by residual salt water and chlorine.
- Do not machine-wash, and do not scrub over a rough surface or use bleach.
- Do not wring dry as the twisting may damage the material. To maintain the shape of the swimwear for as long as possible, squeeze pr press the swimwear dry between your hands after every wash.
- Turn inside out and hang up to dry in the shade, so that the vibrant colours are maintained. Turning inside out also allows for faster drying of the fleece-lining for the Lil'Warmer and Warm-in-One models.
- If you are unable to dry the swimwear immediately, wrap the washed, wet swimwear in a towel first before packing in a waterproof bag.
6. How do I get rid of sunscreen stains on my swimwear?
Mix baking soda and water to make a thin paste. Spread on the stained area and leave for about 60-90 minutes. If the stains cover large areas, soak the whole swimwear in a baking soda and water solution for an hour or more. Baking soda will help to break up the stains from oil-based sunscreen products and make it much easier to remove using a hand-washing or laundry-washing method. After pre-treating, launder as usual.
7. How do I care for my goggles?
Your swimming goggles need just as much care as your swimwear in order to last.
- Do not rub the inside of the eye cup lens with your fingers, towel or tongue. Doing so will cause damage, scratches and may even remove the anti-fog coating. If your goggles fog up, simply dip them under the water to clear the fog.
- Always rinse after use in cold fresh water and let it dry. Goggles are not made to withstand heat, so do not use warm or hot water to rinse them as this will cause damage to the strap, clips and lens. Do not use detergents, alcohol or other chemical products to wash your goggles as these will also cause damage.
- It is also very important to dry your goggles after rinsing. Do not throw your goggles into your wet bag or wrap them up in a towel, as this will cause bacteria and mould to breed and result in damage to the goggles. Never leave your goggles out in the sun either as the straps, clips and eye cups will dry out and break.
- Store your goggles in its original case or a hard case of your own so that it will not get scratched or twisted out of shape in your swim bag.
